The nasturtium

Sketches, linocut, monotype… I was inspired by Brest, the« town at the end of the world » we used to say, at the end of Brittany, France. I lived there for 10 years in total. The big Skies, the architecture, the harbour, and the newly renovated « Les Capucins » inspired me so much. I started to design big prints in regards of this magnificent, huge and historic place.

A former convent and then a workshop for the shipbuilding navy, Les Capucins it is now a huge space inescapable for the people of Brest. The background of the place is fascinating, the photographic testimonies as well. I was greatly inspired by black and white photographs from beginning of the 20th century, especially those with workers in aprons, big protective glasses, gloves, fire and smoke, faces covered with soot… The workshop was so huge, the machines as well, really unrealistic atmosphere…

The Penfeld river cut across the town and splits it in two parts. The new cable cars hyphenated now both of « rive droite » and « rive gauche » and makes a link between diverse territories and stories.
